MAY 24, 2004 (newstodate): Air Astana is poised to become Kazakhstan's sole international carrier as the state-owned Air Kazakhstan is going out of business.
According to media reports, Air Kazakhstan has been declared bankrupt due to increasing debts and the strong competition from Air Astana, set up in 2001 and owned 51 percent by the Kazakhstan state and 49 percent by BAE Systems.
Air Kazakhstan was set up in 1996, but ha since lost terrain aginst the competition from Air Astana, and its fleet was grounded since February.
