APR 05, 2004 (newstodate): The US congress is moving towards a requirement on commercial airlines to implement anti-missile systems.
FAA is to start preparations for certifying suitable systems comprising both laser-based and flare-based systems to ward off missile attacks from ground-based mobile launchers.
It is expected that some 18 months will be required for US and other airlines flying into USA to comply with the new requirements after certification has been completed and a binding directive has been issued.
