APR 28, 2004 (newstodate): Lack of airport capacity in Western Europe could stunt potential economic growth and market opportunities arising from the accession of ten new states to the European Union on 1 May, says ERA in a statement.
-Capacity shortage at major European hubs will limit Eastern Europes access to several business capitals in the West, hampering market opportunities and potential for growth in these areas, says Mike Ambrose, ERA director general.
This may be good news for regional airports in the short-term as new entrant airlines seek viable alternative destinations. It will also create further business opportunities in their surrounding communities.
He warns that the issue of capacity shortage at major hubs will be a stumbling block for economic progression in the long-term. Especially in view of the "market mechanisms" that the European Commission is believed to be considering in its revision of the Slot Allocation Regulation.
On a positive note, ERA forecasts a surge of destinations becoming available to air travellers in the new states Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovak Republic and Slovenia.
