APR 15, 2004 (newstodate): Schenker Lithuania is expecting the country's imminent EU membership to affect the air cargo market in two different directions.
-On one hand our entry into the EU will force all current border procedures down, and this will probably lead to a decrease in intra-European airfreight when shipments will go comfortably on road or sea transportation instead, says Edmundas Daukantas, Schenker UAB Lithuania managing director.
-On the other hand increased trade within EU and with the outside world, especially USA and the Far East, will continue to expand the airfreight market as well, and counting these adverse developments together I expect Lithuania's total airfreight volumes, imports and exports included, to grow by more than 15 percent per year in the time ahead, he says.
According to Mr Daukantas, transfer cargo via Lithuania to Russia and CIS countries comprises about 15 percent of the total, and with the EU membership this volume will grow, too.
Schenker UAB Lithuania is ranked among the country's top-three airfreight forwarders, with DFDS Transport leading the league, which also includes the Swiss M&M.
