APR 01, 2004 (newstodate): A new Chinese-designed regional jet, ARJ21, is planned to hit the global market by 2008.
The aircraft, designed to take 70 to 90 passengers on routes of 1,200 to 2,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 833 kilometers per hour, will obtain its airworthiness certificate from FAA by the end of 2007, and from then it may become available in both the US and the European markets at competitive prices, and with operational costs expected to be between five and 10 percent lower than comparable Western-built aircraft.
So far the aircraft, still under construction, has landed 35 orders from Chinese customers.
