APR 01, 2004 (newstodate): Utilizing the free skies-concept by the entry into EU of the three Baltic states, Riga-based Latvian carrier airBaltic is planning for a significant expansion in the region.
From June 1, airBaltic will open direct flights out of neighbouring Lithuania to Copenhagen, Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin og Dublin, operated with Boeing 737-500 aircraft to be based in Vilnius.
And from August 15, four more routes operated with Fokker F50 aircraft will be added out of Vilnius to Helsinki, Warsaw, Oslo and Vienna.
-These new activities will require more Boeing capacity, so airBaltic will receive its third Boeing 737-500 very shortly, and a LoI has already been signed for the fourth Boeing 737 to join our fleet by May, says Vija Dzerve, airBaltic press officer.
AirBaltic's strategy is based on its main shareholder, SAS' concept of considering the Baltic region part of its home market.
SAS already controls Estonian Air and airBaltic, but pulled back from taking over Lithuanian Airlines, using instead airBaltic to penetrate the Lithuanian market.
