MAR 11, 2004 (newstodate): Cooperating with national and international aviation authorities, ARINC has so far been commissioned to provide 160 new ground stations to support VDL Mode 2 communication between aircraft and ATC, ATM controllers.
In 2003, ARINC provided 12 VDL Mode 2 ground stations in six countries of Northern Europe, and 148 stations providing ground and en-route coverage of North America. The company also provided the start of VDL Mode 2 deployment for AVICOM, Japan's aviations communications provider.
More than 100 aircraft now use ARINC systems for AOC and ATC services, and some 500 aircraft are expected by the end of 2004.
Airlines currently participating include Air France, American, Continental, FedEx, Qantas, SAS, Southwest, and the US Air Force. Also several aircraft manufactureres now offer VDL Mode 2 as standard equipment.
