MAR 23, 2004 (newstodate): While the world's aircraft manufacturers position themselves to take part in the expected "gold rush" in China's civil aviation, China prepares to strengthen its own aircraft manufacturing capabilities.
China has thus aired plans for developing its first large aircraft, expected to take off by 2018.
By 2022, China will need to add 1,400 large aircraft with a cargo capacity over 100 tonnes, and 200 passenger seats.
If all imported, this fleet rejuvenation would cost at leat USD 100 billion, say industry sources.
China has included development of an own large aircraft among the science and technology development program for the next 10 to 20 years.
Liu Gaozhuo, president of China's aviation Industry Corp, has told media that China will develop a large freighter before developing its large passenger aircraft.
