MAR 16, 2004 (newstodate): While still denied traffic rights for freighter operations in Finland, Aeroflot operates a twice monthly DC-10 freighter at Helsinki.
-The freighter operates on an ad-hoc charter basis requiring monthly applications to the Finnish aviation authorities, says Alexander Piven, Aeroflot Finland general manager.
According to mr Piven, the freighter operates from Novosibirsk to Helsinki and on to Moscow, lifting exports from the Far East into Finland and Russia.
Aeroflot has long been seeking an agreement with Finland for operating a scheduled freighter service from Finland to the Far East, but so far without obtaining the necessary agreement.
It is widely understood that Finnair Cargo is keen to defend its singular position in the Finnish market where it offers direct nonstop routes to destinations in the Far East including, lately, Shanghai.
-We hope that succesful negotiations for a code-share with Finnair on the flights between Helsinki and Moscow may also pave the way for a similar agreement on the cargo side, says Mr Piven.
