MAR 02, 2004 (newstodate): By December, 2003, Lufthansa Cargo completed its program for equipping all lower-deck cargo compartments of its 14 MD-11 freighters with heating systems.
The program, begun in September, 2003, was performed by Condor Cargo Technik, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik.
The heating systems ensure that the temperature in the lower-deck compartments remains stable, which is an important prerequisite for the cool-containers to work well.
The cool-containers, manufactured by Swedish provider Envirotainer, are used for transportion of pharmaceutical products, diagnostics, vaccines, serums, plasmas and biotechnological materials.
The heating systems are also equipped with a temperature selector, which allows the loading staff to select between a low temperature range and a normal temperature range. This feature allows the company to tranport perishables in the lower-deck compartment as well.
