FEB 27, 2004 (newstodate): With effect from April 1, Russia is planning to fully abolish its current flight quota system within the domestic airline industry.
The quota system was tentatively lifted last summer for all but 13 of Russia's most lucrative air route between Moscow and a number of popular leisure destinations. This move soon caused traffic to nearly double in volumes, while rates dropped due to the increased competition.
The planned abolishment of the quote system within domestic flights is yet another important move towards liberalising the airline industry, and will lead to further consolidation of the succesful Russian airlines among which the country's top-five airlines now generate half of the total traffic volume in domestic air travel.
