FEB 18, 2004 (newstodate): Swedish consultancy firm, Swedavia has just completed a series of projects to upgrade the ATM services of Gergia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Swedavia, a subsidiary of the Swedish CAA, has been managing the Southgate I and II in the three countries under a contract with the Swedish state development program, SIDA.
One element of the Southgate projects that started in 1998 has been construction and implementation of a new air control tower at Tblisi Airport, to become operational later this spring.
Other issues include a change in the three countries from the Russian standards for civil aviation, to Western standards. Initially a plan for a joint Caucasian air corridor and a joint air trafic control center was also on the agenda but had later to be abandoned as each country eventually chose to maintain its own national ATM service.
Through the projects issues like training of ATC controllers, improved procedures, optimisation of airspace utilisation, and new national aviation laws in compliance with internaitonal standards have been solved.
