FEB 06, 2004 (newstodate): The enlargement from May 1 of the EU with 10 new member states will certainly have a strong impact on the European air cargo scene, says a Swiss observer refuting the opinion held by Lufthansa Cargo.
-The reason why airlines play down this point is that they acknowledge that they have lost out already to the integrators, says Frank Ziesemer, Tristar Aviation Ltd general manager in Switzerland.
-We have seen already that the integrators have taken the lead in European air cargo, and this process will only accelerate with the enlargement of the EU, he says.
-The only possible alternative strategy for the airlines is to strengthen their interline cooperation.
-The new member states' economies will definitely grow fast, and their globalisation will not stop within the EU borders, but expand further through transactions with the US and the Far East markets.
According to Mr Ziesemer, a recent university study has indicated a growth in excess of 20 percent in the integrators' European volumes after the enlargement of the EU.
