DEC 17, 2004 (newstodate): Iraq's Basra Airport is poised to re-opening for commercial traffic by July, 2005.
Operations at the airport have been suspended since the Gulf War in 1991, but the airport is now being refurbished through a USD 4.9 million overhaul.
A contract for the airport's navigational aids is still out to tender, but a US company, Nana Pacific, will start work on the main project and the airport is expected to be ready in July, 2005.
The airport will "soon" be able to handle freighter traffic.
In 2003 six airlines were granted traffic rights at the airport, but traffic never developed.
