DEC 20, 2004 (newstodate): For Austrian Airlines, air cargo is of strategic importance.
-Air cargo is one of three core business areas at AUA, together with passenger line services and charter operations, says Franz Zoechbauer, AUA VP Cargo.
-Cargo actually contributes more than 20 percent of total revenues, so it is fair to assume that some routes actually depend on airfreight, he says.
-The countries in East and Central Europe constitute our prime market, and we are the leading air cargo service provider in this region where imports dominate by some 70 percent, while exports today generate only the remaining 30 percent.
-80 percent of all AUA cargo shipments are transferred in our Vienna hub from where the incoming cargo from the Far East, US and Australia is being distributed by our extensive road feeder services to destinations in East and Central countries, or flown to Kiev by our joint operation with Ukraine International Airlines.
-We have seen strong increases in these loads after May 1, 2004, when the EU admitted new members in the region, and our expansion in 2005 will also focus on countries in this region, says Mr Zoechbauer.
