DEC 01, 2004 (newstodate): By mid-2005, a major project to upgrade the infrastructure of Kazakhstan's Atyrau Airport will be completed.
The projects comprises construction of a new 3,000 m runway, including runway exits, connecting taxiways and the extension of an aircraft platform.
The airport has gained in importance as serving a center of oil and gas exploration, and several western airlines already operate there.
