DEC 06, 2004 (newstodate): Many Russian-built aircraft will meet further difficulties in operating in EU airspace as the requirements for Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System, EGPWS, are enforced from January 1, 2005.
For a TU-154 aircraft, EGPWS updrading will cost around 50,000 USD, and while the earlier GPWS is already installed in many ex-Soviet aircraft, the versions now required will need a costly upgrade.
The situation is rather complex. Siberia Airlines claim that their TU-154 aircraft meet the new EU regulations, but Aeroflot says that while their TU-154 will also meet the new requirements, their TU-104 and IL-96 aircraft do not, and the IL-96 will therefore be pulled out from its European routes.
