NOV 08, 2004 (newstodate): Finnair and Aeroflot will become the first Airbus airline customers among single-aisle operators to implement FANS-B ATC datalink systems.
The FANS-B strenghtens the level of communication between cockpit and ATC controllers by using a new ICAO-standard radio data link.
The two-way communication link enables both parties to exchange written information on aircraft navigation, supplementing conventional radio communication.
The system will also help alleviate radio frequency congestion and enhance communication safety, freeing airspace for more traffic.
Airbus will install FANS-B on 29 Finnair aircraft including 11 A319, 12 A320 and six A321.
The system will also be implemented on Aeroflot's eight A319, seven A320 and three A321 aircraft.
