NOV 03, 2004 (newstodate): On Monday, the Faroese local government, Lagtinget, received an application from "a Danish company" for air traffic rights to operate commercial flights between the Faroe Islands and Denmark.
The Faroese authorities confirm that they have started negotiations, but the applicant has required secrecy and no details are currently available.
From the start of this winter program, the Faroese carrier Atlantic Airways is alone in the market for air transportation between Denmark and the Faroe Islands after Maersk Air's pull-out from the route after more than 30 years of service.
According to industry sources, pressure on the airfreight market from Denmark to the Faroe Islands is mounting despite increased frequencies from Atlantic Airways.
-Fears are that existing cargo capacity will prove inadequate especially during the coming Christmas peak season when postal volumes, taking first priority, will grow as well, says a source.
-Already now cargo customers are very often forced to book express cargo to make sure that their cargo shipments are not shortshipped.
