OCT 15, 2004 (newstodate): While Icelandair has still not officially confirmed its interest in taking a stake in Hugarian Malev, the airline is certainly focussing on expansion.
Talking to Icelandic press, the company's new 32.2 percent stakeholder and chairman, Hannes Smarason, confirms that the company will now seek expansion via mergers and acquisitions.
Icelandair has a strong network in the US, comprising six destination with San Francisco to be added from next spring, in addition to 18 European destinations.
Merging with or buying into European airlines would strengthen the market for Icelandair's US routes via Reykjavik, and provide enhanced distribution of its services in the European markets.
