OCT 25, 2004 (newstodate): Latvian SAS-owned carrier airBaltic is working on a strategy to expand into neighbouring Baltic countries, Lithuania and Estonia.
airBaltic has already set up a base in Lithuania where the airline operates routes from Vilnius to Riga and, from October 31, to London and Munich in competition with Lithuanian Airlines.
The SAS-owned airline has announced intentions of serving from this autumn a total of 10 destinations out of Vilnius, immediately competing with the country's own airline, Lithuanian Airlines.
Since June, airBaltic has offered flights from Vilnius to Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne and Dublin, and new destinations include routes from Vilnius to Helsinki, Oslo and Warsaw from August 15 and a new route to Vienna from August 17. Flights from Vilnius to Munich and London will commence from October, 31.
Now Estonia is being targetted as well, as the airline's president has been in talks with Estonian authorities over the possibility of opening flights from Tartu Airport, Estonia, to Riga, Helsinki, Copenhagen, and Stockholm.
