JAN 26, 2004 (newstodate): Skavsta Airport, south of Stockholm, saw cargo volumes down by about 36 percent in 2003.
In 2002 the airport generated a total of 14,000 tonnes of air cargo, 1,961 tonnes of which were flown and the remaining transported on cargo feeder services.
This volume dropped to 9,000 in 2003, when only 527 tonnes was flown and the remaining volume was carried on trucks.
-2003 was obviously a bad year due to the general decline in the Swedish cargo market. But so far both airlines and forwarders seem to be more optimistic about their performance in 2004, and we have also had, since last Autumn, more activity in the ad-hoc charter market, says Dag Berglov, Skavsta Airport cargo manager.
-To cope with the demands in the industry, Skavsta Airport last year signed a contract with Lufthansa Systems for implementation of the Elwis cargo system that came out as our prime solution after research in the market. Elwis is not exactly a cheap solution but it is tuned to handle all existing and future demands for cargo and cargo data handling, he says.
Skavsta Airport Cargo handles a total of 18 airlines including KLM, Lufthansa Cargo, Cargolux, Martinair, Singapore Airlines, Polar and El Al.
