JAN 07, 2004 (newstodate): For December, KLM Cargo reports its cargo traffic on a par with the same month in 2002, with a six percent lower capacity, resulting in a cargo load factor increase by 4.5 percentage points to 73.4
The company saw its performance strenghtening further on the Asia/Pacific routes, where traffic grew by nine percent while capacity decreased by one percent. This boosted the cargo load factor to 86.7, up 7.8 percentage points.
North Atlantic traffic was down seven percent, but with capacity down in the segment by 10 percent, cargo load factor was raised to 70.6 percent.
With a third Boeing 747-400ERF freighter that lifts 25 tonnes more than other -400 freighters coming in by February, 2004, capacity will increase further on the profitable Asia/Pacific segment.
According to a source within KLM Cargo, rates from China and the Far East to Europe are now so high as to practically sustain a round-trip even if operating almost empty from Europe to Asia.
