JAN 13, 2004 (newstodate): In December, 2003, Icelandair Cargo generated a total of 2,424 tonnes of cargo, up 7.8 percent on 2002.
-Almost 87 percent of the freight was carried to and from Iceland, or 2,263 tonnes compared to 2,057 tonnes last year which is an increase of 10.1 percent, says Petur J Eiriksson, Icelandair Cargo managing director.
-Transit freight between Europe and the US and Canada declined in December by 4.6 percent, while capacity on the North America routes was 20 percent less giving a healthy improvement in load factors, he says.
For the period January-December, Icelandair Cargo carried 28,106 tonnes, roughly the same as the year before.
Traffic to and from Iceland grew by 12.3 percent from 22,732 tonnes to 25,520 tonnes.
The company saw a considerable decline in North Atlantic transit freight mainly because the company stopped carrying TNT freight between Liege and New York in September 2002.
Overall tonnages, however, remained stable as growth in the airfreight market to and from Iceland compensated for the loss in the North Atlantic market.
