JAN 08, 2004 (newstodate): British Airways World Cargo is confident that it will meet the new US security demands taking effect from March 5 up to the cut-over date.
-Starting out by January 2003 already, the company's strategy has been to implement a system that would allow the electronic interchange of House AWBs well before the departure of the aircraft, says a BAWC spokesman.
-The system went operational with BAWC in Washington by July, and after all remaining snags have been cleared away it will become effective to comprise all BA flights into the USA even ahead of the final cut-over date, he says.
According to the spokesman, BAWC has been talking to its major customers and will complete a tour comprising all these customers that provide the bulk of the company's cargo business.
-Some of them have responded very positively to the notion of providing full House AWB info to the airline, others have understandably been more reluctant and aired their desire for confidentiality and non-disclosure of sensitive information. But even so, our over-all impression is that the industry is indeed prepared to meet the security demands and convinced that there is really no other option either, he says.
As for the costs involved in meeting these new requirements, he says that for BAWC they are "not insignificant".
