SEP 22, 2003 (newstodate): "The renewal of the country's aircraft park, so that Moldova becomes an air transit bridge between the East and the West," was stated as a target for the next years in president Vladimir Voronin's speech on Moldova's national day of civil aviation.
The president noted the "imperative need to change the Soviet-era Tupolev and YAK aircraft, which fail to meet the current standards."
The president and other VIPs attended the presentation of the Airbus A320 aircraft, the latest acquisition of the state-run air company Air Moldova, which is now the fifth company in the CIS regionan to operate this aircraft type.
The aircraft, built in 1998, was purchased under leasing conditions from Airbus. Air Moldova avoided to mention the cost of the plane, invoking the commercial secret.
During this year's H1, five national and four foreign air companies operate in Moldova. During this period, airlines transported 139,000 passengers, up eight percent on the same period last year.
