SEP 12, 2003 (newstodate): The Iraqi Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications has announced its strategic plan for the development of the country's transport infrastructure along the road towards a free market economy.
For Civil Aviation, the objectives include opening Iraqi airspace to over-flights, and opening the international airports in Baghdad, Basra and Mosul to commercial traffic.
For the airport sector the plan aims at corporatization of all airports run as quasi-commercial entities leading to private sector funding and investment in business, adopting transparent monetary procedures and enforce tariff and trade agreements by GCAA.
The aerospace infrastructure will be developed as per findings of the Plan, both in terms of airspace modernization and airport expansion and upgrade.
-The long-term objectives cover establishing harmonious regulatory procedures and enforcement procedures in Iraq in line with the international standards that would ensure the safe, secure and efficient air travel and commerce in Iraq, the plan says.
