SEP 11, 2003 (newstodate): Many participants in yesterday's seminar at Billund Airport on EU's directives on airport security were in for a surprise.
-A cargo handling agent is a company located airside at an airport, and certified by the national civil aviation authority, said Jessi Johnsen, Danish Civil Aviation Administration chief inspector, thereby categorically negating any notion of "off-airport" handling agents.
-We were indeed surprised to learn of this objective distinction, says Jacob Bo Jepsen, Kales Airline Services, cargo GSA for many off-line airline cargo companies in Denmark.
Only two days earlier Kales had issued a press release to inform the market that all shipments for Martinair, Continental, Virgin, Royal Jordanian, China Southern, Asiana, Air Malta, Garuda, Air New Zealand, plus several others should henceforth be delivered to airline trucking and handling company Haugsted, located off-airport.
-While we as cargo GSA are not ourselves party to the contracts signed with Haugsted for cargo handling of the shipments to be trucked to continental airports, we certainly feel uneasy about the uncertainty thus revealed, Jepsen says.
The GSA will now contact the individual airline customers to convey the information, and to seek clarification of the current situation, and the airlines' decision on how to proceed.
