AUG 27, 2003 (newstodate): During the period January-July, Stockholm Arlanda's cargo volumes have dropped by 8.7 percent, to 64,742 tonnes against 70,894 tonnes last year.
The drop has however accelerated steeply since the first quarter, which was down only 2.4 percent.
Thus, during the months of May, June, and July, volumes have dropped by 5.2, 18.2, and 18.8 percent, year-on-year.
The decreases reflect the effects from the Iraq war and the SARS crisis against the background of a generally deteriorating world economy, which has hit hard at Sweden's major exporters including Ericsson that used to serve as the Swedish "locomotive" for air cargo exports.
Due to the negative trends in air cargo at Stockholm Arlanda, plans for a new SAS Cargo terminal to replace the currently used, but ageing, terminal have been put on hold.
Earlier, the existing SAS Cargo terminal was doomed to go as it blocked the airport's plans for new aircraft parking stands.
As traffic is down at the airport, these plans are no longer on the immediate agenda, leaving room for SAS Cargo's terminal to continue operations.
