AUG 28, 2003 (newstodate): SAS has signed a long-term contract with ARINC to implement expanded air/ground communications services, including the first use of ARINC's new VDL Mode-2 service in European airspace.
SAS plans to retrofit most of its passenger aircraft with VDL Mode-2 avionics, and ARINC will equip the European air/ground network in Europe with VDL Mode-2 capability.
In June this year, Eurocontrol selected ARINC's VDL Mode-2 service to support its next generation of ATC communications.
SAS, American Airlines and Lufthansa will be the first carriers to use these datalink-based facilities when the new air traffic service begins in October at the Maastricht Upper Air Center.
