AUG 22, 2003 (newstodate): Effective from September 5, SAS Cargo has signed an agreement with Korean Air Cargo to introduce a weekly freighter service from New York to Copenhagen Airport.
-The move comes in response to increasing market demands, and to counter-balance a decrease in capacity from this winter's programme by one daily SAS flight between New York and Copenhagen, the company says in a press release.
The agreement with Korean Air Cargo will also enable SAS Cargo to accept shipments beyond the weight and volume capacity of SAS' Airbus A330/A340 passenger aircraft operated on the North Atlantic routes.
After this move SAS Cargo will be the only freighter operator on routes between Denmark and the North American east coast.
In 1998, SAS Cargo operated an Atlas Air Boeing 747-200F freighter between Gothenburg and New York, but the service was closed again after a short period of time.
In 2000, Norwegian-owned Sterling Airways started an Atlas Air freighter-operation from Copenhagen to various destinations in the USA, but this service also proved short-lived.
