AUG 15, 2003 (newstodate): Commercial flights in Russia and flights through Russian airspace may be endangered if a solution is not found to the issue of low-payed Russian air traffic controllers.
Russian media quotes Sergey Kovalyov, President of the Russian Federation of Trade Unions of Air Traffic Controllers, as saying that fewer young specialists are going into the profession because of the low level of pay of air traffic controllers.
Currently, the average age of air traffic controllers is 45, which is considered retirement age. About 90 percent of air traffic controllers now working in the northern region are pensioners.
The trade union has campaigned for a 28 percent increase in pay for air traffic controllers since December 2002, and the issue has caused several labour conflicts.
