AUG 19, 2003 (newstodate): Zimbabwe's Harare Airport has been reported to be unfit for landings by some of the major international airlines.
The government has issued a directive to Zimbabwe's CAA for the upgrade of the airport's runways and other infrastructure including runway lighting and a new approach system, but fears are that lack of financial means to carry the heavy costs will ground the project before it takes off.
Harare Airport was opened in 1955.
