AUG 15, 2003 (newstodate) Vienna Airport's impressive growth in air cargo is to a large extent due to economic growth in the neighbouring former E European countries.
-Especially Hungary plays an important role for the airfreight traffic at Vienna Airport, says Hans J Mayer, Vienna Airport exec VP head of corporate communications.
According to Mr Mayer, many new companies in Hungary, including producers of electronics, hi-tech equipment, and the automotive industries generate much air cargo.
-Most of it will go through Budapest Airport, but a significant proportion is routed by trucks via Vienna Airport's traffic system, says Mr Mayer.
The trend is clearly manifested by airline trucking figures, which are included in the airport's cargo statistics.
In 2002, trucked air cargo constituted 29 percent of the airport's total volumes. During this year's H1, the proportion has increased to 33 percent, which was also the percentage in July.
