JUN 27, 2003 (newstodate): Taiwan now officially confirms that a decision is underway to allow direct chartered cargo flights over the Taiwan strait.
Former Taiwanese Premier Vincent Siew, presently chairman of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, says that improving economic and trade relations across the Taiwan Strait with China will help Taiwan evolve into a regional transshipment and logistics center.
Siew has proposed that Taiwan first promote exchanges in direct chartered cargo flights across the Taiwan Strait before the two sides engage in direct air and shipping links. He added that President Chen Shui-bian has instructed the Mainland Affairs Council to craft a comprehensive plan for promoting more convenient cargo transport services across the strait.
He also suggested the building of a new international airport on the island to augment the logistics center project. But he did not specify where the new airport should be constructed. Local governments in central and southern Taiwan are fighting for the chance to build the airport in their areas.
