JUN 18, 2003 (newstodate): Lufthansa Cargo sees limited prospects for investing in new-built freighters.
-Return on investments in the air cargo business is so low as to make it very difficult to convince airline boards of the feasibility of investing in new freighter, says Andreas Otto, Lufthansa Cargo's Board.
According to mr Otto, the company will rather seek ways of investing in converted passenger aircraft that come at a cheaper price.
Lufthansa Cargo still maintains a fleet of seven-eight Boeing 747-200 freighters. This fleet will be re-assessed by the end of this year, and the aircraft wil probably fly for some two years more, corresponding to the time it takes to convers existing MD-11 passenger aircraft to freight purposes.
