JUN 10, 2003 (newstodate): Together with Danish Post, Danish producer of composite equipment, KMT-Nord, is developing a new type of mail cart for use onboard aircraft.
The new mail cart to hold trays of sorted mail shipments is made of composite materials entailing benefits of weight savings by 60 kg per unit, from 80 kg with current metal models, down to 20 kg with the new composite type.
A Boeing 737 with a cargo capacity at 4.2 tonnes will take 14 mail carts, aggregating a total weight saving at 840 kg, corresponding to roughly one-fourth of the aircraft's cargo capacity.
According to Danish Post's weekly magazine, the new mail cart will cost around DKK 50,000 compared to the current cost of DKK 4-5,000 for a traditional metal mail cart, entailing a pay-back period of 18 months.
Once in serial production, the new composite type will however drop significantly in price, with a correspondingly shorter pay-back period.
