JUN 10, 2003 (newstodate): The Chinese China Cargo Airlines Ltd is scheduled to meet with Taiwanese company China Airlines by the middle of June, to discuss cross-strait cargo flights.
The news has forced the Taiwanese Mainland Affairs Board to stress, however, that any direct cargo service would require official consultations between the two governments.
Seen against the currently strained relations between the two side of the Taiwan strait, odds are not too good for the bi-lateral initiative.
According to reports in the Taiwanese press, both Taiwan's largest laptop computer producer, Quanta Computer Inc, and the American Chamber of Commerce have stressed that a direct cross-strait cargo service would futher the Taiwanese government's goal to turn Taiwan into an Asia-Pacific regional operations centre.
