JUN 27, 2003 (newstodate): Work on Kazakhstan's new capital airport at Astana, which started on September 17, 2002, will be completed by the end of next year.
When completed, Astana International Airport will be one of the largest airports in Central Asia, and greatly facilitate cargo operations between Europe and the Far East, cutting flight time on this route by two hours.
Astana International Airport, with a total covered area of 46,000 square metres, will serve three million passengers a year after its inauguration in December 2004.
The contract for the project was granted to a consortium consisting of Alarko, Siemens, Marubeni and Laing on 15 April 2002 by the Kazakhstan Ministry of Transport, and approved by the Japanese Exim Bank NBIC on 5 July 2002.
The contract cost for Astana International Airport Renewal Project is 20.1 billion Japanese yen (approximately 160 million dollars).
