JUN 10, 2003 (newstodate): Finnair's result for the second quarter of this year is clearly negative, the need for cost savings has certainly not decreased in the past months. If there are no new unpleasant surprises, a slow recovery of demand might begin in the autumn, but the result for the whole year will nonetheless be negative, says Keijo Suila, Finnair president and CEO in a relase issued today.
The statement comes as Finnair's operations are threatened by a massive protest action by employees in the ground handling, technical and catering departments.
Finnair has launched a savings programme, which is aiming for 160 million euro in annual savings this spring. As a part of the programme Finnair is axing 1200 jobs, the majority of which will be cut during the current year.
