JUN 03, 2003 (newstodate): Armenia is seeking a position as a transiting hub for Russian international flights from Siberia and Moscow to Turkey and other countries in the Middle East.
One precondition is Armenian airline, Armavia's recent take-over from bankrupt airline Armenian Airlines of a number of international routes including flights to Amsterdam and Frankfurt, with a total of 35 flights to be eventually restored by Armavia.
Another is the modernisation of Zvartnots Airport, where runway renovation is currently taking place.
Armavia is building up a fleet of initially three Airbus A320 aircraft in addition to smaller planes to serve domestic routes.
