MAY 26, 2003 (newstodate): Taiwan's airlines noted a record-high number of flight suspensions between May 18 and 31.
Due to SARS and the declined market demand, a total of 1,000 flights have been suspended.
The four domestic air carriers had already been scaling down their operations because of the economic slowdown that began last year. During March, passenger loads dropped 14 percent from the same month of last year. Following the outbreak of SARS, the number of passengers shrank 30 percent during April. The slide has widened to 52 percent so far in May.
The number of passengers passing through Chiang Kai-shek International Airport totaled 6,813 last Saturday, a record weekend low since the airport was inaugurated in 1979. Only 3,027 arrivals and 3,786 people departing, according to airport officials.
