MAY 06, 2003 (newstodate): Cargo capacity is down after the outbreak of SARS have forced airlines to further reduce capacity that was already cut due to effects from the war in Iraq.
This has a deep impact on the air cargo market.
-Because the Nordic Air Cargo Market is a rather small and there has actually never been any significant volume of over-capacity, we have not noticed any significant change in demand or rates, says Timo Riihimaki, Finnair Cargo Director Marketing & Business Analyses.
-However, our Asian loads have been remarkably good since we started the Asian expansion. Especially the Asian exports have really soared.
- In general, it's making sense that e.g. the large Central European markets to/from Asia have already noticed an upturn in the selling rates because of the reduced capacity, Riihimaki says.
