APR 04, 2003 (newstodate): It remains a political issue if Taiwanese airlines China Airlines, EVA Airways, and Far EAst Air Transport are allowed to perform aircraft maintenance for Mainland Chinese carriers.
Taiwanese CAA confirms that the Taiwanese carriers are eager to seek maintenance contracts from Mainland operators.
Mainland aircraft are still not, however, allowed byt Taiwan's government to land at any airport in Taiwan expect for contingency or operational safety reasons.
Taiwanese press reports have disclosed that two aircraft from Shanghai Airlines, a Boeing 757 and a Boeing 767, are scheduled to land in Taiwan in May to undergo maintenance, and EVA Airways and Far East Air have submitted applications to perform the work.
It is known that since November 1999, China Airlines has performed engine overhaul and maintenance for Air China's Boeing 747 freighters. Three engines have reportedly been overhauled, and a contract has been won for maintenance of a fourth engine.
