APR 01, 2003 (newstodate): AEA, The Association of European Airlines has reported substantial decreases in its members passenger traffic for the week of March 17th 23rd.
The Iraqi conflict began in the early hours of Thursday 20th, so in effect the data includes four days of war. Compared to the same week in the previous year, international passenger traffic was down 12.3%.
Within Europe, the decline was 14.6%, on the North Atlantic, 10.2% and on Far Eastern routes 12.4%. On routes to the Middle East, the decrease was a massive 42.2%.
Such an effect serves as a stark indication of how this localised conflict can affect airline traffic on a global scale, AEA says.
