MAR 13, 2003 (newstodate): In February, Vienna Airport's total cargo volumes were up 17 percent, to 13,067 tonnes.
-As Vienna Airport is located within easy reach of most major countries in East and Central Europe, and is the center of a significant airline traffic system, it has a role to play as a regional gateway, says Hans Mayer, Vienna Airport.
-Thus roughly one third of the total cargo volume is trucked cargo, primarily to and from countries in this region.
Mayer says the trend in trucked cargo is very positive, with a growth by 26 percent in February.
Correspondingly, the growth in flown cargo at Vienna Airport was 17 percent in February.
-Budapest is only 220 km away, and Bratislava only 45 km. Thus, lead times are very low, Mayer says.
According to Mayer, Austrian Airlines does operate to several East and Central European destinations but with small aircraft only, providing little cargo capacity in the market.
Integrators including TNT and UPS also operate freighters to and from Vienna from where shipments are then taken by smaller freight aircraft or trucks to provide destinations in the region with express and logistics services
