MAR 24, 2003 (newstodate): In 2003, Lufthansa Cargo sees the total worldwide volume of perishables airfreight at just under two million tonnes, a volume expected to rise to more than 2.6 million tonnes by 2008.
This is one of the findings in the company's new issue of "Trends & Forecasts", AirDeX.
Though increasing in volume, perishables airfreight as a proportion of total airfreight requiring special handling (3,753,175 tonnes in 2003) will actually slide back from currently 47 to 38 percent in 2008 (total volume 6,971,223 tonnes).
The annual growth rate of perishables airfreight is seen to be 9.2 percent in 2003, falling to 7.1 percent per year until 2008.
Still, perishables airfreight will remain the single most inportant segment in terms of volume.
