MAR 20, 2003 (newstodate): Taiwan's air carriers will be allowed to apply to Beijing authorities for permission to overfly China during the duration of the war in Iraq.
Taiwan's airlines must first apply for permission with the mainland authorities in accordance with international practice if they wish to change the routes of their Europe-bound flights by overflying China, Kazakhstan and Russia.
Industry sources say that overflying the mainland would help Taiwan-based aviation companies save at least three hours' travel time on their routes to European destinations compared to their present routes, which usually overfly Southeast Asia and the Middle East
