MAR 28, 2003 (newstodate): CANSO, the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation, warns that this year's reduced air traffic due to bad economy and the effects from the Iraq war will lead to "significantly higher" navigation charges next year, thus reinforcing a downward spiral already damaging the air transport industry.
-Navigation charges are calculated by dividing the cost of service provision by the number of flights using the service. Therefore any substantial reduction in flight numbers creates a sharp increase in navigation charges next year, CANSO Secretary General Alexander ter Kuile says.
CANSO has released its forecast of the air traffic reductions that will result from airlines cutting flight schedules owing to a war in Iraq. European and Asian Air Navigation Service Providers in particular will be badly hit and could experience reductions in air traffic movements of up to 25% as a result of lower demand for air travel, CANSA says.
