MAR 26, 2003 (newstodate): Lithuanian freight forwarder, Konekta Cargo expects this year's performance to stay roughly on 2002-levels.
-In 2002 we saw an increase in revenue while volumes kept stable. But while we collected more money from our customers it was handed over directly to the airlines that charge us increasingly with fuel, security and war surcharges that we cannot pass on to the customers, says Marat Barkovski, Konekta Cargo managing director.
Barkovski says the average size of air cargo shipments have dropped significantly during the recent years.
-Only few years ago, average size might be around 1,200 kg while it has now dropped to 500 kg, reflecting the turn from former extensive textile exports to small items like samples, electronics and pharmaceuticals, Barkovsky says.
According to Barkovski this change has stiffened competition from the integrators including DHL, TNT and UPS in the Lithuanian market.
-While we cannot compete directly with the ihtegrators we rely on personalized service and deep familiarity with the market being our prime assets, Barkovski says.
With a total of 18 employees, Konekta Cargo has three offices in Vilnius, and own office in Moscow. Besides, Konekta is part-owner of Konekta Cargo in Riga that is mainly in the maritime cargo business.
